Selena Chenxing, paused purposefully at the gates of Karin Fort. Her eyes took in the sight of the city wall, worn and crumbling from years of neglect, and the soldiers, their spirits low and their readiness lax.
A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she murmured to herself, “Had you been willing to part with a small fraction of your ill-gotten wealth to bolster your defenses, you might not have caught the eye of the Somer leader. Now, it seems, you’ll have to part with much more.”
Her words hung in the air, a challenge wrapped in a whisper, “Show me your resolve, Vic Gardden. What will it be? Your life, or half your fortune?”
Beneath her, the brown warhorse gently stamped its hooves, seemingly urging her to move forward. It couldn't comprehend why its mistress chose to linger here, yet Selena Chenxing showed no intention of advancing.
Her thoughts had traveled far. From an unknown mercenary to a renowned mercenary leader, she had spent eleven long years. Countless victories had made her a legend in the mercenary world, a symbol of triumph, a goddess of miracles. No one knew how high she would ultimately rise, and no one knew how high she wanted to go.
Except for Elanora.
Selena, had only ever shared her dreams with the female sorceress.
Half a month ago, she received a letter from Elanora. Aside from the time and place of their meeting, it contained just one phrase - "The gears have started to turn."
And so, the goddess of miracles descended upon Karinburg.
"What is that?!" The startled cry of the leading soldier pulled Selena back from her thoughts. The mercenary woman sighed and shook her head, once again disappointed by the lax defenses of Karinburg. They had actually taken this long to notice the anomaly in the sky.
In order to avoid causing a larger commotion, Selena had no choice but to wave towards the sky. Swiftly, the harpy that had been circling in the sky and causing the soldiers to stir, flapped its wings and landed on the horseback.
"Good morning, Io!" The harpy playfully nudged the warhorse Io with her talons, eliciting a joyful neigh from the spirited steed.
"Good morning, Selena." The enchanting harpy, much like a child yearning for affection, enveloped Selena in a warm embrace from behind, her body nestling comfortably against Selena's back. She called out Selena's name with a tender familiarity that echoed in the air.
"I recall instructing you to remain at the camp," Selena, with a reassuring smile towards the bewildered soldiers around her, addressed her unruly deputy with a calm yet firm tone, "If these jittery soldiers were to attack you out of fear, I might not be able to intervene in time."
"Harbila isn't accustomed to human company, despite the camp dwellers harboring no ill feelings towards her," the harpy Harbila confessed, her voice carrying a note of melancholy.
"There are more people in Karinburg, and..." Selena's voice faded as she felt the wings around her tighten,, their slight tremble betraying an unspoken fear.
"But Selena is here, so Harbila isn't afraid." Harbila's voice held a stubborn edge. This harpy, saved from the clutches of slave traders by Selena two years ago, found the idea of a world without Selena unbearable.
"Alright then, let's go meet the sorceress together. We might even beat her there." Selena gently tilted her head, her cheek brushing against the soft face resting on her shoulder. A subtle shift of her feet sent a signal to Io, her trusty warhorse. The eager steed, shaking its head in anticipation, set off towards Karinburg, the bell around its neck chiming a merry tune as it carried them into the heart of the fortress.
Upon Selena and her harpy deputy Harbila's arrival at the training ground, Selena's keen eyes quickly picked up on three distinct happenings. Her friend, Elnora Blackfeather, had made an early appearance. A graceful elf maiden was skillfully toying with her adversary. Most alarmingly, a notorious mercenary in the rest area had his crossbow trained on the unsuspecting elf maiden.
Under the watchful eyes of the goddess of miracles, no foul play could be tolerated!
Echoing Elnora's sentiments, Selena, who bore no ill will towards the tree elves, swiftly picked up her mahogany bow. With two arrows nocked and the bowstring drawn to its limit, she waited for the perfect moment. As the crossbow bolt took flight, so did her arrows, piercing through the air with unerring accuracy!
Nothing could be more eye-catching than the spectacle of an arrow, released a moment later but striking its target first, accurately intercepting the crossbow bolt. The collective gasp from the crowd was so loud that it even disrupted the ongoing duel on the training ground. The tree elf paused her movements, puzzled by the sudden outcry, until she spotted a crossbow bolt and an arrow lying on the ground behind her. Just as she was piecing together what had transpired, a scream echoed from the direction of the rest area.
The would-be assailant’s hands were skewered by arrows, his treacherous act laid bare for all to see. Fearing the wrath of the tree elf, he dared not linger in the rest area. Nursing his arrow-inflicted wounds, he beat a hasty and ignominious retreat, disappearing into the safety of the crowd.
The tree elf watched the retreating figure of the assailant with a look of contempt. For a fleeting moment, a glint of murderous intent flashed in her golden eyes. This despicable wretch had dared to launch a covert attack. Now, she could snuff out his life with a single, casual flick of her arrow, if she so wished.
But in the end, she let go of the thought of killing. Instead of wasting an eagle feather arrow on him, it was better to turn her attention to the female rider who had just saved her life and was now leading her horse into the field.
Her eyes and forehead… they were so distinctive…
Was that a harpy riding on the back of her warhorse?
And she was in the company of the sorceress Elnora.
“I half-expected you to lose an arrow into his back,” Selena, her forehead adorned with a pair of sharp horns and eyes glowing a deep crimson, offered a slight bow. A smile, mirroring that of the sorceress, graced her lips. “Now he’s made off with one of my precious bone-piercing arrows.”
“I’m sure that arrow will find its way back to you soon enough,” Elnora chimed in, her voice laced with amusement as she introduced the newcomers. “These are the ones we’ve been waiting for - Selena Chenxing, the leader of the Sapphire Mercenary Group, and her most loyal deputy, Harbila…”
“Lynn Piaoye of the Star Forest,” the tree elf interjected before Elnora could introduce her to Selena. She too offered a slight bow, then asked with a hint of surprise in her voice, “Are you… Forgotten People?”
The moment the tree elf mentioned the Forgotten People, the harpy on horseback stiffened. But Selena immediately gently patted her talon, "Don't be impulsive, Harbila, this tree elf lady means no harm."
"I'm sorry, I just didn't expect to see the Forgotten People outside of Delni," the tree elf's voice became calmer.
"There are always exceptions to everything, just like how I am fortunate to meet a beautiful tree elf outside of the Star Forest today," the smiling mercenary continued, "However, what Harbila is upset about is not that, but rather than being referred to as the Forgotten People, I would prefer you call me a Child of Darkness."
"I thought those of you who chose to stay on the surface all despised that title..." The tree elf couldn't hide her surprise for a moment, although she quickly regained her composure. Choosing to stay on the surface, calling herself a Child of Darkness, and not staying in the Delni Empire, the tree elf was full of curiosity about the mercenary named Selena in front of her.
Indeed, the friend of the sorceress is no ordinary person, the tree elf thought to herself.
"There are always exceptions," the mercenary woman echoed, her gaze shifting to the sorceress, "When I passed by the Drywood Hotel, I noticed you hadn't booked a room. So, I took the liberty of reserving a noble suite for you. Why don't you head there and wait for us before Harbila and I return? We can catch up properly then. After all, this isn't the best place for a chat."
"I thought we could rest at the camp together after our meeting today, so I didn't plan to stay overnight in the city," the sorceress offered with a light-hearted chuckle, explaining her oversight.
"I intend to make that penny-pincher pay through the nose this time around, so I'll be staying at the lord's mansion for quite a while," the mercenary woman said, her eyes flicking towards the miserly lord on the stage. Lord Rosen of Vic Gadden, who had been whispering something to his secretary, had noticed her. Selena knew it wouldn't be long before a messenger would come to escort her to the lord's mansion for a detailed discussion.
The Drywood Hotel is a lodging that seldom leaves its guests content. The wooden beams and doors are steeped in a heavy, musty odor, while brazen rats scamper freely over the worn-out furniture. The so-called 'luxurious' noble suite is merely a room adorned with a threadbare carpet and faded, loose-hanging curtains.
The moment the Star Princess stepped in, her brows knitted together in a frown that didn't ease. "Are we really staying in a place like this? How can you be so nonchalant about it?"
"Because I've stayed in worse places in Olpat," Elnora gave a rueful shake of her head. She was well aware of the dismal conditions of Karinburg's only inn, and reality proved the rumors true. Yet, having once lodged at a shabby inn in Olpat, her reaction wasn't as pronounced as the elf's. She pinched her nose, rummaged through her bag for a packet of powder, and sprinkled it around, masking the room's musty stench. "That's why I didn't consider this place initially."
"This isn't your real motive for wanting to reclaim Olpat, is it?" The tree elf's mood lightened a bit once the room's odor became less offensive, and she even managed to tease the sorceress. However, the Star Princess, who had just entered the room, merely tested the bed in the corner with a light press. The decrepit bed frame immediately creaked under her touch, causing her recently relaxed brows to furrow again. Utterly disappointed with the room, the elf walked over to the window, reached for the curtain, and with a casual tug, the worn-out curtain fell apart and scattered on the floor.
"We're only staying for one night, right?" The tree elf's voice echoed with a tinge of despair. She gingerly pushed open the window, half-expecting it to fall off its hinges. Leaning against the window frame, she murmured to herself, "Sleeping on the roof would be a better option than this..."
"If Selena says it's one night, then it's one night," Elnora responded, her hands busy tidying up the rickety bed. Her voice held a note of respect when she spoke of the mercenary.
"Have you known each other for a long time?"
"Longer than you can imagine." After making the ramshackle bed somewhat presentable, the sorceress was the first to sit, patting the space next to her invitingly. "My dear elf, I suggest you get some good sleep now. There's going to be quite a spectacle tonight."
"I'm fine with sleeping on the floor," grumbled the Tree elfe, who had lost all hope for the dilapidated bed. She returned to the room, intending to make do on the carpet. But just as she was about to lie down, a plump gray mouse scurried across, causing her to gasp in surprise. Swiftly changing her mind, she climbed onto the bed and huddled behind the female sorceress, "Do you have any mouse-repellent powder?"
"No need for powder to repel mice, my dear sprite," the barefoot sorceress chuckled, picking up the boots that the Tree elfe had discarded and giving them a few knocks on the floor.
After the arrival of the goddess of miracles, the hiring of free mercenaries came to a halt. The crowd in the square, who had been there for the spectacle, had long dispersed. Night fell, shrouding the entire Karinburg in darkness. Selena and her eagle woman adjutant had not yet returned. Elnora, who had been waiting by the window all night, was the first to wait for something else. With a hint of a smirk playing at the corners of her eyebrows, she turned and headed over to Lynn·Piaoye.
During the day, the Tree Elf, who had a thousand complaints about this dilapidated bed, was now sleeping on it, sweetly and soundly. She rested her head on her arm, her slender eyes closed as if smiling, seemingly savoring the victories of the day. The faint moonlight crept in through the window, painting a gentle smile on her half-open, half-closed mouth. The sorceress really didn't want to disturb her beautiful dream, but in the end, she steeled herself and woke the Tree Elf.
"Join me on the rooftop to gaze at the moon, dear Elf," the sorceress squinted her eyes, covered the mouth of the Tree Elf who was about to lose her temper after hearing this, stifled her laughter, and crumpled up the bedsheet, making it look like someone was still sleeping in the dim room. Only then did she take the hand of the Tree Elf, who seemed to have understood something, and together they climbed out of the window and hid on the roof.
The Tree Elf didn't utter a word, didn't pose a question. She was sprawled on the rooftop, her gaze not on the moon, but fixed on the deserted street, mirroring the sorceress beside her.
She was curious about what she was waiting for, but she also knew that the cryptic sorceress would keep her guessing. So, she decided not to ask, taming her curiosity, lying quietly on the rooftop, waiting for the answer to unfold itself.
Just then, a slight shift of a shadow at the corner of the street caught the Tree Elf's attention. Then another, and another... until five figures were stealthily moving in the shadows, inching towards the inn. They clearly weren't guests, as they skirted around the main entrance, made their way to the back of the inn, and pinpointed the room where the Tree Elf and the sorceress resided. One by one, they slipped through the window.
"They had already done their homework during the day," Elnora murmured. As soon as she heard the twang of the crossbow, she leaned out, tossing a vial of poison through the window. "And now, they're the ones making the first move."
"He seems to be the mercenary who tried to ambush me during the day, only to be chased off by Selena. But why?" Lynn Piaoye recognized one of the intruders. She was puzzled about what kind of bad blood she had with him and that he was hell-bent on putting her in harm's way.
"That guy's name is Enric, 'Green Blood' Enric. His blood isn't green, but the blood of those who fell victim to him did turn green," the sorceress began to explain as the room echoed with violent coughs. "The crux of the matter is, he's not really a mercenary. He, along with the other four, are assassins from the Azermei Assassin Guild, experts in poison. They never intended to be mercenaries in Carlinburg in the first place."
"So, they... they were hired by Samer to wreak havoc?" The clever Tree Elf put two and two together almost immediately.
"Your performance today was nothing short of spectacular," Elnora whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "If Vic Gadden had managed to hire you, you'd be a formidable threat. So, after his failed daytime assassination attempt, he'd surely try again under the cover of night. To salvage the Assassin Guild's reputation, and to earn his keep from his employer."
"But I clearly turned down the lord's offer," the Tree Elf shot back, a hint of agitation creeping into her voice. "Why is he so hell-bent on this?"
"Imagine if Vic Gadden's heartfelt words had swayed you, made you reconsider? I know it's a long shot, but a killer like him wouldn't gamble on that. Yet, his stubbornness cost him dearly. It's quite the irony, isn't it? A killer adept in the art of poison, meeting his end by the very poison he wielded," Elnora mused, her voice barely above a whisper. The room had fallen eerily silent. Elnora strained her ears, confirming the demise of all five men inside. She nudged Lynn Piaoye with her elbow, signaling the Tree Elf to steady her feet. She leaned out, gripping the window frame for support, and stole a quick glance inside. A rare frown creased her face. "We'll bunk on the rooftop tonight. Next time... I need to dilute the poison a bit.."
The Tree Elf, driven by her curiosity, had initially planned to take a peek inside the room. But the thought of the sorceress, who had such a high tolerance for the room's condition, backing out after taking a look, made her grimace and abandon the idea. "Who would've thought we'd end up sleeping on the rooftop... But there's one thing I still don't understand. If Samer hired assassins during the invasion, why didn't he directly hire them to assassinate the lord of Vic Gadden?"
"Perhaps Enric's mission was just to create chaos in Karinburg, and someone else was responsible for assassinating the lord," Elnora speculated, flipping over to lie on her back on the rooftop, gazing at the bright moon overhead. "Selena has been at the lord's mansion for so long, she's probably waiting for the assassin's attack, using it as a bargaining chip..."
The sorceress guessed right. The assassin responsible for assassinating Vic Gadden was someone else, someone who commanded a higher bounty and had more patience...
