The Half-Cat Woman has always been biding her time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike a fatal blow.
She wouldn’t be like Enrique, acting recklessly without full confidence, nor would she be unaware of being targeted like him. In their line of work, only those with enough patience and exceptional skills have the chance to live until retirement.
“Prey won’t always stay vigilant, so all we need to do before launching a lethal strike is to wait quietly in the shadows.” This is the teaching of the current leader of the Shadow Assassin Guild, “Black Widow” Julna, a lesson she has always kept in her heart.
Born a Half-Cat Woman, she was naturally gifted in the art of assassination and stealth. After enduring what seemed to outsiders as brutally harsh training, she emerged as a standout in the Shadow Assassin Guild, a place teeming with killers. Over three years, she flawlessly executed hundreds of assignments, skillfully defeated all challengers who dared to dream, and dealt with those unfortunate souls who had the misfortune of offending her, intentionally or otherwise. She repaid the favor of “Black Widow” Julna, who always held her in high regard, with a series of ingenious assassinations. When she rose to become the second-in-command of the most influential assassin guild in the dazzling jewel of the northern continent - the holy city of Hegeral - she had only been with the guild for three years.
Yet, such glory brought no pride to the Half-Cat Woman, nor did it bring a smile to her face. These feelings were meaningless to her.
As a Half-Cat Woman, she was just doing her job, nothing more.
Unaware of the spectacle unfolding at the arena, where the tree elf Linen Leaf was making a name for herself, the Half-Cat Assassin had already slipped unnoticed into the lord’s mansion, her mind set on a deadly task: poisoning the lord’s tea.
Her plan was almost foolproof. As the selection event outside came to a close, Vic Gardden and a female mercenary returned to the lord’s mansion. They made their way to the meeting room, a grand space at the heart of the second floor. Not long after they settled in, a maid entered, carrying the very tea she had poisoned. But then, something unexpected happened.
“Allow me to offer this act of kindness as a token of our meeting,” said the female mercenary, her demeanor elegant, a mysterious smile playing on her lips. As the maid walked past her, she suddenly tripped.
The Half-Cat Assassin didn’t waste a moment. She quickly relocated, certain that what had just transpired was no accident. She couldn’t pinpoint where things had gone awry, but she knew she couldn’t afford to stay put.
Her instincts, honed from being a top-notch assassin, saved her life. She had barely changed her hiding spot when a large group of soldiers, summoned by the now jittery lord, arrived at the council hall and began a massive search. She watched as three fully armed soldiers slowly searched the place where she had been hiding. With a smirk of contempt on her face, the Half-Cat Woman, moving silently on soft feet, quietly disappeared into a new shadow.
She was still unclear about the cause of her failure, but one thing she was certain of was that the female mercenary was no ordinary person. So, she made a new decision: she would not take any action until she had figured out the female mercenary's background or until she had left the lord's mansion.
Although the presence of the female mercenary made the Half-Cat Woman feel a bit tricky to deal with, she was not yet forced to leave the lord's mansion. Apart from the female mercenary, the other seemingly fierce guards posed no threat to her at all. The elegant and deadly assassin kept changing her position in the dark, mocking the stupidity of the guards on one hand, and closely watching the movements of the female mercenary and Lord Gardden on the other.
Such a search wouldn't last forever. Eventually, they would have to sit back down and continue their conversation. The female assassin, having dodged wave after wave of searches, continued to hide in the shadows. She watched as the rattled Vic Gardden, constantly flanked by four heavily armed guards, nervously returned to the council hall to resume the interrupted discussion with the female mercenary.
"How many assassins do you think those Samer beasts have hired?" he asked, his voice shaky from the recent scare.
“Gathering information isn’t my strong suit,” the female mercenary replied reasonably, “but once their invasion fails, the assassinations against you will cease. If they can’t fully occupy this place, continuing to hire assassins could likely invite retaliation.”
“Did you hear that? Increase my protection until everything is over, and double the guards in the kitchen!” After giving his orders with feigned calm, Lord Gardden sat back down, panting heavily. Unusually, he adopted a humble demeanor, saying ingratiatingly, “I’m extremely honored that the Goddess of Miracles is willing to help us, the Rosens, through this crisis.”
His humility was indeed a true reflection of Vic Gardden's feelings. With a formidable enemy at the gates, and no mercenary group willing to take on this job, he was already under enough stress. Now, he had no choice but to cling tightly to Selena's Sapphire Mercenary Group. Only under the protection of the Goddess of Miracles was there a chance to repel the Samer attack.
"Save the pleasantries, cozying up to me won't reduce my price," Selena said. Looking at Lord of the Vic Gardden, who dared only to stick his head out to communicate with her under the strict protection of his heavily armored guards, she couldn't help but laugh. Thinking about how he had truly become a "penny-pincher" now, she continued, "So, I'll just say it straight. For a reward of thirty-five thousand gold coins, I guarantee your safety."
"That kind of price..."
"I'm not taking all your savings. Use that head of yours, which you hardly use, and think. If the Samer's army breaks in, you'll be swinging on a noose, your tongue turning purple, your eyes bulging out like a dead fish, helplessly watching those barbarians empty the treasury you've worked so hard to fill," Selena coldly interrupted his useless chatter. Then, in the most matter-of-fact tone, she described the terrible fate that awaited lord Gadden after his city was breached, leaving him sweating in fear.
"I know, but..." The penny-pinching lord tried to make a final effort, but when his gaze met Selena's eyes, he couldn't even utter a complete sentence, "The amount is really... if... could it be..."
"I can wait," the female mercenary said, closing her eyes and leaning back in her chair to sleep. "But how much longer can you wait?"
"Well, well, well, we can... we can wait together," Lord Gardden replied, feigning toughness. He shrank back, hiding behind his wall-like heavy armor, concealing his unease and helplessness.
The Half-Cat Assassin, hidden in the shadows and observing everything, could also wait. She was equally concerned about the outcome of this transaction. If the female mercenary really struck a deal with the lord, her assassination task would undoubtedly become more difficult. So, while the female mercenary was resting with her eyes closed, the Half-Cat Woman briefly prepared to assassinate her. Her hand had already touched the dagger, almost ready to thrust it into the unguarded heart of the female mercenary, but at the last moment, she gave up the plan.
She wasn't unaware that the female mercenary was feigning sleep. In fact, it was precisely because she knew this that the warrior part of her blood briefly boiled, giving rise to an impulsive thought to challenge this female mercenary who seemed to be provoking her emotions.
After reverting back to being an assassin, the Half-Cat Woman decided to continue waiting. She wasn't here to pick a fight with anyone; she was here to assassinate Vic Gadden.
After enduring a difficult afternoon and evening, things seemed to progress as night fell. Lord Rosen, Vic Gadden, was the first to break the long silence. After making a great effort, he finally managed to utter a complete sentence in front of Selena: "Twenty-five thousand gold coins, plus my gratitude, and the gates of Karin Fort will always be open to you and your mercenary group. How about it?"
He thought his offer was generous enough, but Selena didn't even bat an eyelid and didn't hide her disgust for him: "Your gratitude is worthless, thirty-five thousand." She repeated the figure from the daytime.
"You can't! I... I mean, you should make some concessions too, so that... our negotiations can also seem sincere..." Gadden, who didn't dare to get angry, started to stutter again.
"We're not negotiating," Selena sighed, having nothing to say to the man in front of her who couldn't grasp the reality of his situation. "We're discussing how much your life is worth."
"Well, I might think my life is only worth twenty-five thousand..."
Selena was shocked by Gadden's level of greed. She had to admit that she had underestimated the difficulty of extracting gold coins from him. So, after a brief moment of thought, she decided to make use of the cat assassin who had been hiding above her all this time.
"Vic Gadden... Vic Gadden..." Selena shook her head, glancing at him, "You still don't quite understand your situation. Let me tell you, without me, you probably won't even see tomorrow's sunrise." With that, the female mercenary suddenly looked towards the corner of the third floor and whistled.
When the female mercenary issued a warning to Vic Gadden, the Half-Cat Woman had already sensed that something was wrong. When the female mercenary looked towards her hiding place, the female assassin who had drawn her dagger was looking right at her!
After the whistle sounded, a shriek came from outside the house. The harpy Habila flew through the window, attacking the Half-Cat Woman. If it weren't for the female assassin's premonition of danger and her quick reaction, the sharp claws would have embedded themselves in her back.
The exposed female assassin didn't choose to run. Instead, she made a bold move. She rushed directly into the council hall and threw a torch she had grabbed at Selena. She didn't expect the torch to hit the female mercenary, but at least it would allow her to draw a conclusion. As expected, aside from dodging the torch, the female mercenary didn't take any other action. Even the harpy who had just attacked her stayed in place without continuing the chase.
So, her current obstacle was just those four tin cans.
The Half-Cat Woman, who had fallen into the hall, immediately pounced forward at an incredible speed before the four heavily armed guards could react. As the guard at the front drew his sword, she stepped on his iron gauntlet, raised her hand, and her sharp dagger followed the joint of the armor, stabbing into the guard's armpit, severing his artery.
Then, the female assassin instinctively flashed to the right of this dying guard, using him as a shield to block attacks from one side. In fact, her precaution was superfluous, because the two guards on that side were busy protecting the terrified Lord Gadden to evacuate the council hall, and had no time to attack her.
After eliminating the threat on one side, the Half-Cat Woman quickly lowered her body and dodged the sweep of another guard by a hair's breadth. Then she slid between the swordsman's legs, jumped back, pounced on his back, held the helmet with one hand, and pressed it back, and the dagger quickly stabbed into the gap that was pulled out!
As the blood spurted from the guard's throat, Lord Gadden was conveniently escorted out of the council chamber. The remaining two guards swiftly closed the door, turned around, and approached the female assassin who had just dispatched their two comrades.
The half-cat woman took a slight step back, wary of her nimble feet getting entangled with the two lifeless bodies on the ground. She cast a sidelong glance towards the female mercenary, who now stood side by side with the harpy. Both of them wielded their weapons, their palms open and wearing faint smiles, as if the imminent battle held no significance for them.
For the half-cat woman, this was welcome news. Regardless of whatever machinations the female mercenary had in mind, at least her immediate opponent had not multiplied.
And then, in a sudden burst of movement, the female assassin lunged forward, her dagger shimmering as it spun in her hand, charging towards the guard on her left. The guard, having witnessed her deadly skills before, did not dare to underestimate her. He immediately assumed a defensive stance, denying her any opportunity to strike at his vulnerable points. At the same time, the guard on her right seized the chance to launch an attack on the half-cat woman. However, unbeknownst to both of them, their responses were all part of the female assassin's cunning plan.
Her attack was merely a diversion. Seeing the guards react differently, the half-cat woman swiftly twisted her wrist and flung her dagger toward the guard on her right. At the same time, she unfurled a cloth bag, revealing a handful of sand, which she hurled towards the guard on her left. This guard, fully focused on the female assassin, had no idea what was coming. The sand particles found their way through the small gaps in his helmet, temporarily blinding him. He was left disoriented, only hearing the sound of his comrade's sword hitting the ground.
The dagger thrown by the female assassin hit the guard's handguard, not causing any significant damage but forcing him to loosen his grip on his sword. Disarmed, he clumsily tried to retrieve his weapon, hindered by his bulky armor. Taking advantage of the moment, the agile half-cat woman swiftly approached, kicking the sword farther away and evading the guard's attempt to grab her hair. She seized a nearby chair and swung it with all her might, targeting the guard's lower leg. Losing his balance, the guard toppled backward, while the broken chair leg repeatedly struck, pressing against his helmet and throat...
"Are you alright?" the last guard shouted, temporarily blinded, swinging his sword aimlessly. His voice carried evident fear and frustration. "Did you kill her?" Then, he heard the sound of his comrade falling.
"Where is she?" the guard exclaimed in desperation, removing his helmet and discarding his gauntlets to rub the sand from his eyes. "Where is she?"
"She's right behind you," the elegant assassin whispered, her voice filled with a chilling calmness. Before the guard could react, a blood-stained dagger sliced through his throat.
"Impressive skills. The people under Samer's command certainly know how to make a grand entrance," Selena smiled, praising the spectacular combat after the last guard fell face down on the ground. With her hands still spread outward, assuming a non-threatening posture that posed no danger to the half-cat female assassin, she continued, "Before the reinforcements arrive, can we have a few words?"
The half-cat woman remained cautious as she looked at the female mercenary. She pressed her ear against the door for a moment and then, with a cold detachment, asked in an unusual sentence structure, "It's strange. Why do you obstruct her, yet refrain from attacking?"
"I need him alive because I need his money, but we haven't reached an agreement yet," the elegant mercenary bowed gracefully, extending an invitation. "If you're willing, I'd like you to take some time and visit my temporary camp in the Black Forest. We can discuss matters further before you continue with your mission."
The half-cat woman quickly pondered in her mind and then flashed a toothy smile, accepting the suggestion. "She agrees and will visit as soon as possible."
"Excellent!" Selena clapped her hands happily. Then, in a slow and deliberate manner, trying not to give the female assassin any misunderstandings, she drew her own sword and performed a graceful flourish. With a gentle tone, she suggested, " to provide an explanation to the incoming reinforcements and as a symbolic farewell, we can engage in a friendly spar."
