Because of my long military service, my daily routines have become quite regular. So, the next morning around six o'clock, I naturally woke up.
Seeing my mom preparing breakfast, I planned to call Professor Zhang and the others over to join us. However, my mom informed me that Professor Zhang had already left with the three personnel from the Marine Bureau when it was barely dawn, probably heading towards the dark pond area.
I understood that they must have been too eager to wait and wanted to explore the dark pond as soon as possible.
But then again, most of these expert professors are like that. When they encounter something they're interested in, they can delve into it tirelessly, sometimes even more passionately than going into battle. However, most of these individuals aren't driven by monetary gain but rather by their reputation or achieving a certain accomplishment they're proud of.
After finishing breakfast, the sunlight was already glaring, and my mind was consumed with thoughts of the water monkey, so I felt compelled to head over to the dark pond area to assess the situation.
Upon reaching the area near the jujube tree, Huǎngzi was engaged in lively conversation with some girls, so I called out to him, and together we made our way to the dark pond.
As we arrived at the edge of the pond, we noticed a white minibus parked there, surrounded by a bustling crowd of people. Under Professor Zhang's guidance, they all appeared to be busy preparing various equipment and instruments. Most of those folks were new faces to me, and I reckoned that aside from the trio staying at my place, the rest were likely part of the crew lodging at Lǎo Cài's place.
When Huǎngzi and I arrived, Professor Zhang approached us with a solemn look and said, "About this matter, no matter the outcome, I hope you two won't go spreading rumors about the water monkey incident. It could stir up unnecessary fear among people and might be manipulated by opportunists. This is no laughing matter."
Huǎngzi seemed a bit defiant, maybe finding Professor Zhang's words a bit too stern and wanting to argue back, but I quickly grabbed him and said, "Let's just go along with it!" Then, turning to Professor Zhang, I added, "Better safe than sorry. Those creatures are definitely not to be underestimated."Professor Zhang paused for a moment, then nodded reassuringly and said, "Don't worry! I've already thought this through in advance. Since you're both here, let's lend a hand."
When he mentioned "lend a hand," it basically meant that Huangzi and I were to assist them in carrying the gear. The oxygen tanks for diving were all stored in the minivan, while the others were busy inspecting the swimsuits. Those swimsuits were rather peculiar, with a layer resembling chainmail on the outside, something I had never seen before.
According to Professor Zhang, they were shark-proof suits. Just to be on the safe side, they decided to use, chainmail that not even sharks could penetrate, so they believed the water monkeys wouldn't stand a chance either. However, I couldn't shake off a vague sense of unease, a feeling deep down inside, yet I couldn't quite pinpoint what exactly I was worried about. At that moment, a police car rolled in. The minute it stopped, Lǎo Cài and Liàngzi hopped out without delay. They mentioned right away that city officials had tasked them with sealing off the area tight to ensure complete secrecy. So, they set up a police cordon and assigned Huǎngzi and me to stand watch, keeping villagers at bay.
About an hour and a half later, Professor Zhang had everything sorted and ready. Watching him coordinate the Oceanic Administration crew, I couldn't help but wonder. Sure, Professor Zhang was a top-notch researcher, but what was his connection to the Oceanic Administration? Why were they all taking cues from him?
Since Professor Zhang wasn't too familiar with the water monkeys, he opted for caution. Instead of diving headfirst, he sent two divers down to scout the area. Once they pinpointed the crack in the stone, the first dive mission would be checked off the list.As the moment approached, Professor Zhang turned to the two divers once more, his tone serious yet reassuring, "This time around, things are different. There's a good chance that whatever lies beneath the murky depths of the pond is beyond our comprehension. So, let's not take any chances. Your safety is paramount."
The divers nodded, their smiles reflecting both confidence and a hint of nervous excitement. They made their way to the waiting rubber raft, donning their waterproof hoods with a sense of purpose. As they prepared to plunge into the unknown, Huangzi turned to me with a quizzical look and asked, "What's the deal? Why are they diving in like that? I've never seen this technique before."
I chuckled and explained, "Diving is usually divided into two types: light equipment and heavy equipment. But regardless of the type, fins are essential. Fins are usually wide, hard, and buoyant, making it difficult for divers to walk or even jump when wearing them. That's why they enter the water in this manner."Secondly, the rest of the diver's gear, such as the air tanks, regulators, dive computers, and masks, is either bulky or delicate. Before entering the water, it's crucial to avoid any sharp collisions or impacts with this equipment. Otherwise, it could lead to malfunctioning machinery or even leaks, posing a serious threat to the diver's safety.
Therefore, divers often opt for this inverted entry method, which is both safe and convenient. It's a technique they've honed through trial and error, finding it to be the best way to enter the water.
In fact, I learned about this diving method during my time in the military, but I've never experienced it firsthand. After sharing these insights with Huǎngzi, the two divers had already vanished from sight, descending to the depths below.
t's hard to say exactly how long it had been, but it felt like quite a while. Those two divers still hadn't come back up, and it was really starting to get to me. Professor Zhang was pacing back and forth, looking really worried.
Some of the other divers seemed to be getting antsy, shooting nervous glances at Professor Zhang, and they were about to dive in to check things out.
But Professor Zhang waved them off and furrowed his brow, saying, "Hold on a sec, let's wait a bit longer."
Those two divers looked a bit miffed like they wanted to argue, but they held their tongues. It was pretty clear they had some reservations about Professor Zhang.
Suddenly, there was a splashing sound that broke the calm of the water's surface. We all turned to look, and right in the middle of the water, two big bubbles popped up, tinged with what looked like blood.
Seeing that, a shiver ran down everyone's spine. It was pretty obvious that something had gone seriously wrong down there. Before we could even reach the rubber dinghy, the two bodies slowly emerged from where the bubbles were rising. Just as expected, those two divers appeared lifeless, their diving gear mostly missing. Only their oxygen tanks remained, hanging on by a thread and hissing air in an eerie, "tearing" sound.
Some of the divers on shore seemed visibly agitated. Without waiting for Professor Zhang to intervene, the two guys immediately plunged into the water. They swiftly swam over to the bodies.
At that moment, I caught sight of a few blood-red shadows flickering underwater. It startled me, and I quickly realized what they were.
Professor Zhang seemed to have noticed too. He yelled urgently, "Oh no! You two, come back quick! There's something down there!"
Huǎngzi and I were quite a distance away, and at that moment, we completely disregarded the tasks Lǎo Cài had given us. We immediately hurried to the edge of the pond.
With just one glance, Huǎngzi exclaimed loudly, "Oh my gosh, looks like there are three water monkeys!" After saying that, he looked at me with a mix of shock and fear.
I turned my gaze back to the water and saw those red shadows darting back and forth around the two bodies, moving incredibly fast, reminding me of the situation we encountered yesterday.
Upon hearing Professor Zhang's shout, the two divers were momentarily stunned. But they quickly regained their senses and promptly pulled the bodies back, swimming sideways towards the rubber dinghy.
However, before they could reach halfway, those red shadows swiftly closed in on them like specters.
The two divers clearly spotted those eerie red shadows, and being completely taken aback by the sight, they were overcome with panic, so much so that they even forgot to reach for their military knives strapped to their arms.
In the midst of their terror, their bodies suddenly lost their balance, and a scream escaped their lips as they helplessly plummeted into the water, swiftly vanishing from the surface as if they were never there to begin with.
Meanwhile, Lǎo Cài remained remarkably composed in the face of danger, swiftly retrieving his pistol from its holster without bothering to take aim before unleashing a barrage of shots into the water.
As I watched closely, it was evident that Lǎo Cài‘s aim was flawless. One of the elusive red shadows darting around was visibly struck by his bullets, causing a crimson bloom to spread across the water's surface. Then, just as quickly as it appeared, the red shadow plunged into the depths below, leaving us uncertain of its fate—whether it met its demise or managed to evade us.
Professor Zhang worried that Lǎo Cài might accidentally harm the two divers underwater, stepped in, and halted him. With urgency in his voice, Lǎo Cài exclaimed, "Those two divers are already at the bottom of the pond. Do you really think they stand a chance of making it back alive?" His expression was stern as he looked at Professor Zhang, and it was evident he was teetering on the edge of losing his composure.
This question left Professor Zhang momentarily speechless. In just a short span of time, four divers had vanished without a trace, and he seemed to grapple with accepting this harsh reality. It was indeed a case of "defeated before the battle had even begun."
I found Lǎo Cài's reasoning to be quite logical. Consider this: those two divers weren't even wearing their headgear when they were dragged to the bottom of the pond. Even if the water monkeys didn't kill them, they would surely suffocate to death.
Since the divers were already gone, attempting a rescue now would undoubtedly be a suicide mission. It was becoming increasingly clear that mere military knives and daggers wouldn't be enough to fend off the water monkeys.
Professor Zhang took a moment to gather his thoughts, expressing a tinge of self-reproach, "I figured we were just scouting, so I didn't think to have them carry guns. Never imagined... sigh! My lapse in judgment."
Lǎo Cài offered reassurance, "What's done is done. No point dwelling on it now. Priority is getting those four divers' bodies back."
With a distracted nod from Professor Zhāng, he turned to the remaining divers and directed, "Gear up and get ready to hop on the rubber dinghy."
Meanwhile, the remaining divers returned to the minibus. They fetched a hefty metal crate from inside, and upon prying it open, Huǎngzi and I were taken aback. The crate was chock-full of firearms, easily thirty or more.During my time in the military, I got to know firearms pretty well, even if it was just with blanks during training. So, when I saw the guns in the crate, I recognized them right away.
Among them was our latest domestically-made submachine gun — the Type 09 lightweight submachine gun. It's super easy to carry around and incredibly accurate. In close combat, it's hands down the best weapon. Plus, each magazine holds fifty-five rounds, making it a semi-automatic lightweight weapon that's easy to handle. Just aim and gently squeeze the trigger to fire continuously or shoot single rounds.
Then they brought over a smaller crate. Instead of guns, it was filled with new-style hand grenades. These grenades are only a bit bigger than eggs, but they pack a serious punch. They might not be as powerful as dynamite packs used for rock blasting, but they're much easier to carry. Someone could easily strap on twenty of them without breaking a sweat.
Looking at those weapons, it was a relief. It felt like the country was taking the Dark Pond incident seriously. Otherwise, the technicians wouldn't have been so thorough, let alone these new weapons. Plus, even the police department was just offering peripheral assistance, leaving Professor Zhang fully in charge. There were probably some things that couldn't be shared publicly.
With everything set, Professor Zhang took charge, signaling to the others, "Remember, shoot if there's trouble, but avoid using grenades. The rubber dinghy can't handle that force and might capsize."
Of course, outsiders like me and Huǎngzi couldn't join in. Lǎo Cài and Liàngzi weren't much better off either. When they compared their pistols to the others', it was obvious they weren't on the same level. It was a tad awkward, but Professor Zhang didn't involve them, simply instructing them to act from the shore.
