Huǎngzi's shots did the trick quite nicely. As we approached to check, the creature that had been crouching on the ground was nowhere to be seen, likely scared off by the gunfire.
Glancing at the submachine gun in his hand, Huǎngzi then looked at me with a thoughtful expression, as if something had just occurred to him. He turned to me and asked, "Lǎo Qín, you've had your fair share of gunplay in the military. What's your take on the penetration power of this submachine gun?"
Having handled a variety of firearms during my military days, from old-fashioned rifles to semi-automatics, and even renowned ones like the Type 54, 64, 94, and the infamous "Desert Eagle," I was quite familiar with their capabilities.
Without hesitation, I responded, "The Type 05 packs a decent punch in terms of penetration, with an effective range of 150 meters. It's versatile too, allowing for both single shots and bursts."
Huǎngzi's face turned pale upon hearing this, and I asked in astonishment, "What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?"
Huǎngzi shook his head, saying nothing. Suddenly, he grabbed me and Lǎo Cài, pulling us back. I was puzzled by his actions; what was he up to this time?
Lǎo Cài tried to break free from Huǎngzi's grip, and asked in confusion, "What's going on? We were in the middle of a conversation, why are we leaving?"
Huǎngzi stopped in his tracks, his expression serious as he said, "I fired five shots just now, and at least three hit that thing. If this gun you mentioned has such strong penetration power, why can't we find a body at the scene? What does this indicate?"
As we reached the final sentence, Huǎngzi's face had turned particularly grim.
I had a sudden realization myself—how did I overlook this question?
If Huǎngzi wasn't exaggerating, and three shots were fired, there was no reason for the water monkey to escape unscathed!
Lǎo Cài seemed to grasp this too and responded to Huǎngzi, "Are you suggesting that thing is invulnerable?"
After some thought, Huǎngzi analyzed, "I don't know if it's invulnerable, but since it screamed, it must be afraid of bullets to some extent. But fear alone won't help us; our goal is to kill it."
He had a point. An unknown creature that bullets couldn't kill—our chances of success in continuing the search were practically nonexistent. But, now that we're in this situation, are we really going to leave with nothing to show for it?
To play it safe, Huǎngzi suggested, "If things don't work out, maybe we should head back and let the higher-ups handle it."
"That seems like the best option. However—" Lǎo Cài paused for a moment, looking at Huǎngzi with a hint of skepticism, "But then again, you handled that gun pretty well. Have you had some practice before?"
Huǎngzi was caught off guard for a moment and asked, "What do you mean?"
Lǎo Cài's expression suddenly turned serious, resembling an interrogator questioning a suspect, as he scolded Huǎngzi, "What I mean is, have you had any experience with guns before?"
Indeed! As an ordinary person, under normal circumstances, one may never even have the chance to lay hands on a gun in their entire lifetime, let alone know how to use one, especially not a submachine gun.
It's no surprise that Lǎo Cài, being a cop and all, would have his doubts about Huǎngzi. And right about now, even I'm starting to realize just how serious this situation is. Owning a firearm without proper authorization? That's no joke!
Seeing the worried looks on our faces, Huǎngzi seems to catch on to his slip-up. He stumbles over his words for a moment, unable to come up with anything to say.
It makes you wonder, though. Did Lǎo Cài hit the nail on the head? Could Huǎngzi actually have some experience with guns? Was he involved in some shady business with firearms, or did he have a past using them for less-than-legal activities?"
Once the charges are laid, it's no laughing matter. You're looking for at least a decade or so behind bars, and for more serious offenses, it could even mean the death penalty.
After a long pause, Huǎngzi nervously tried to explain, "You see, Lǎo Cài, it's the modern era now. Getting your hands on a gun is a piece of cake. I often travel to Hong Kong and Macau for business, and there are plenty of shooting clubs over there. I've been a few times, so it's not a big deal."
Lǎo Cài wasn't convinced. He shot back, "Don't feed me that line. I know you inside out. Those places are for the wealthy. Do you have the means to frequent them regularly?"Huǎngzi didn't want to get bogged down in an argument with Lǎo Cài over this matter, so he quickly changed the subject, saying, "Hey, what's with you? We're supposed to be talking about the water monkey issue here. Why do you keep veering off topic?"
But Lǎo Cài wasn't buying it. He aimed his gun at Huǎngzi and said sternly, "Until we clear this up, I won't discuss anything with you. Let's settle this at the police station. It's in your best interest to be honest with me."
Seeing Lǎo Cài getting serious, Huǎngzi's expression changed, and he retorted sharply, "Who do you think you are? You're just a small fry trying to act tough. Don't you dare lecture me on how I learned to handle guns! I'm warning you! Without evidence, you better not mess around. I won't tolerate it!"
With that, Huǎngzi raised his gun, aiming it at Lǎo Cài.
Lǎo Cài, suddenly furious, cursed, "You're pushing your luck! If you've got guts, go ahead and shoot at me!"
Huǎngzi didn't back down, replying confidently, "You're the one who should make the first move. I can take a hit, no problem."
Though Lǎo Cài sounded tough, he couldn't actually fire his gun. All his talk was just meant to intimidate Huǎngzi.Who would've guessed the other person wouldn't fall for it and instead fought back? In an instant, his face was filled with anger, yet he didn't know how to respond.
Huǎngzi was sharp-witted and completely understood Lǎo Cài's intentions. Seeing Lǎo Cài remain silent, Huǎngzi calmly remarked, "Threatening regular folks with your authority without any proof, I could easily take you to court for that. Don't believe me? Feel free to try." With that, he casually started whistling.
Huǎngzi had a stubborn streak, and once things turned sour, he wouldn't back down an inch.
Lǎo Cài wasn't particularly fond of Huǎngzi, to begin with, and now, provoked by his words, he couldn't take it anymore. Without hesitation, he clenched his fist, ready to throw a punch. Both of them had guns in hand, and things were on the verge of getting out of hand. Sensing the tension, I quickly stepped in between them.
Huǎngzi is a childhood friend of mine, and I couldn't just stand idly by if things escalated with Lǎo Cài.
But Lǎo Cài is a straightforward person too, and I didn't want to get into a confrontation with him. It was quite a predicament at that moment.
After some consideration, I decided to play the peacemaker and exclaimed, "Are you two done yet? It's absurd to be aiming guns at each other like this. If you're feeling brave, go face that dark pond creature. What's the point of showing off against your own people?"
Huǎngzi quickly went along with my approach, nodding in agreement and saying, "Lǎo Qín is right. Today, I, as Huǎngzi, won't stoop down to your level, Lǎo Cài."
With that, he holstered his gun, shooting a cold gaze at Lǎo Cài while keeping a safe distance.Lǎo Cài let out a frustrated sigh, clearly feeling upset, but considering my presence, he restrained himself from expressing his anger. Moreover, he knew he was outnumbered, and starting a confrontation at this point wouldn't be wise.
Giving Huǎngzi a stern look, he reluctantly lowered his gun, but not without a cautionary remark, "Don't get ahead of yourself, kid. If I ever find evidence against you, you'll be in trouble."
In my opinion, Huǎngzi wasn't someone to be admired, just a lowlife. With Lǎo Cài's limited abilities, how could he possibly match up to him?
To be frank, as long as Huǎngzi doesn't cause any more trouble for Lǎo Cài later on, that would be a relief. Why invite more problems?
But it wasn't the time to dwell on these thoughts. Turning to Lǎo Cài, I asked, "Lǎo Cài, let's stay calm. What's our next step?"
Lǎo Cài glanced at Huǎngzi with a hint of defiance and responded, "Who knows if that kid's any good with a gun? Just because he claims to have hit the target, does it mean he actually did? What if he didn't? Are we just going to abandon Professor Zhang and the others? If you two want to leave, I won't object. After all, you're just bystanders, not obligated to get involved. But I'm different. I have a duty here."I found myself in a mix of emotions, feeling both amused and exasperated. Here was Lǎo Cài, well into his thirties, yet acting like a child, engaging in this tit-for-tat with Huǎngzi. What a peculiar situation!
Huǎngzi, not one to back down from Lǎo Cài's teasing, decided to play along and quipped, "Lǎo Qín, we're not leaving until we find that injured monkey. I won't let anyone accuse me of exaggerating. That's just not who I am!"
Despite their mutual disdain, they both held their rifles and made their way toward the cave entrance with an unspoken understanding. I didn't hesitate to follow suit.
When we reached the entrance, Huǎngzi couldn't resist a final jab at Lǎo Cài before venturing into the cave, saying, "I'm going in. If you're not up for it, there's no need to follow."
With that, he boldly entered the cave, and we all followed closely behind, ensuring we didn't let our guard down for a moment.Upon entering the cave, we noticed distinct human marks on the walls, yet it remained a mystery what they were originally meant for and how the cave ended up as the water monkeys' dwelling.
The air inside the cave felt heavy, making it hard to breathe, hinting that it might lead to a dead end.
After a few steps, Huangzi paused and squatted down, examining a pool of liquid on the ground. He then dipped his fingers into it and rubbed them together.
Standing up, he turned to me and said, "It's water monkey blood!"
He then turned to Lǎo Cài with a sense of pride and remarked, "See? This is evidence that I hit the water monkey!"
Faced with undeniable proof, Lao Cai had little to say, but the disdain on his face spoke volumes: "I have better things to do."We pressed on for about another dozen meters and noticed two bullet casings on the ground, likely left behind from Huǎngzi's earlier shots.
The cave seemed to stretch on endlessly, with a sharp bend looming ahead, resembling the twists and turns of an intestine.
At this point, the blood trail left by the water monkey disappeared, and there was no sign of its body, suggesting it was still out there somewhere, perhaps hiding in a dark corner.
This signaled danger, prompting us to become more alert. We slowed our pace, focusing all our attention on the path ahead, ready for whatever lay ahead.
As we walked to this point, I couldn't help but realize a big problem. It's been quite a while now, and besides stumbling upon those two bodies earlier, we haven't found anything else. We're clueless about where Professor Zhang and the others might be or why there's not a single hint left behind.
But Huǎngzi chimed in with his take, saying that the lack of findings could actually be a good sign. He suggested that maybe the cave runs deeper than we think, and perhaps Professor Zhāng and the rest are just up ahead, not too far away, or maybe even further down. Regardless, reaching the end of this cave is what we're aiming for.
