Faced with the sudden appearance of the corpse and the corpse scorpion, none of us had the courage to take another step forward. It was like our instincts kicked in, prompting us to step back cautiously.
The corpse scorpion, sensing our presence, began to sway its tail and raise its two formidable pincers, almost as if it were sizing us up, trying to decide which one of us it would target first.
Huǎngzi acted swiftly, immediately positioning himself in front of me and Lǎo Cài with the assault rifle, motioning for us to continue moving backward while he covered our retreat from behind.
But the creature wasn't foolish either. As soon as it noticed our movements, it started advancing slowly, steadily closing the distance between us. Thankfully, it wasn't moving too fast, giving us some time to react.
In the midst of this tense situation, Huǎngzi raised his voice and directed, "Lǎo Qín, help Lǎo Cài onto that stone platform first. I'll handle this!"
Feeling the weight of responsibility, I assisted Lǎo Cài in stepping back cautiously, making sure not to make any sudden movements that might provoke the creature. After all, the last thing we wanted was for the corpse scorpion to suddenly turn its attention towards Huǎngzi.
Seeing both Lǎo Cài and me retreat, Huǎngzi let out a sigh of relief. He swiftly raised his gun, taking quick aim at the corpse scorpion, and fired off a few rounds.
The gunshot echoed loudly in the quiet surroundings, ringing in my ears.
I wasn't sure if Huǎngzi's shots had hit their mark, but before I could take a closer look, he dashed back toward us as if his pants were on fire. "Didn't hit it! Get on the stone platform, there's more than one!" he exclaimed, leaping onto the platform himself.
I couldn't help but wonder to myself - the corpse scorpion was quite large, and at such close range, with Huǎngzi firing off several shots, there was no reason he shouldn't have hit it!
But now wasn't the time to dwell on that. The stone platform was about a meter high, and with Lǎo Cài's injured foot, he couldn't jump up like Huǎngzi did. I had to help him up, supporting and lifting him onto the platform.
Just as I was about to jump up, I suddenly found myself face to face with two corpse scorpions, one in front and another behind me. A third one was also closing in on me.
I was about to look back to see how many more were behind me when Huǎngzi quickly warned, "Lǎo Qín, don't move! Those things are lightning fast!"
Lightning fast? How fast could they be?
Could it be that Huǎngzi's shots were missed because these things were so fast they could dodge bullets?
The thought made beads of sweat form on my forehead. I had initially thought of jumping onto the platform, but now I dared not move.
Huǎngzi and Lǎo Cài were safe on the platform. Although the corpse scorpions were large, they couldn't jump up a meter-high platform.
But now the question was, what should I do?
Those three corpse scorpions were barely a foot away from me. If they decided to attack, it would be curtains for me, wouldn't it?
Seeing my fear, Huǎngzi quickly reassured me, urging me not to panic. He said he'd figure something out and lifted his submachine gun.
My heart raced with fear, thinking he was going to shoot. But to my surprise, he removed the magazine from the gun, then carefully extracted two bullets, disassembled them, and poured the gunpowder into his palm. Finally, he took out a lighter.
Huǎngzi calmly told me, "Lǎo Qín, nothing likes fire. Just hold on a little longer, and I'll come to rescue you."
I felt a surge of despair. In the time it took for Huǎngzi to prepare the makeshift weapon, one of the scorpions had crawled onto my foot. The thought of Lǎo Cài's injury made me shudder. This anti-shark suit couldn't protect me from a scorpion's sting.
Huǎngzi was all set and jumped down from the stone platform. At that moment, one of the corpse scorpions immediately chased after him.
Calm and collected, Huǎngzi pulled out a lighter and ignited it, causing the gunpowder in his hand to burst into flames. A tongue of fire shot towards the scorpion at my feet.
The power of the gunpowder was not to be underestimated. Threatened by the high temperature, the scorpion on my foot immediately scurried away, followed by the other two, swiftly retreating from our vicinity.
Seeing the opportunity, Huǎngzi reminded us, "Let's hurry up and get on the stone platform!"
The two of us scrambled up the platform, and just then, a burst of gunfire erupted. It was Lǎo Cài shooting at the three corpse scorpions.
It wasn't until the magazine was emptied that Lǎo Cài stopped shooting. Looking down, I saw the three scorpions reduced to a mess of limbs and greenish fluid splattered everywhere. Luckily, we were far enough away to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
As the immediate danger passed, I was ready to leap off the stone platform when Lǎo Cài intervened, "Only two are down, the other one's lurking under this platform."
His words made me hesitate to descend. But just waiting wasn't a viable option either. We couldn't afford to play cat and mouse with the corpse scorpion indefinitely. Time wasn't on our side.
I shrugged with a sense of helplessness and asked, "So what now? Sit tight and wait?"
Lǎo Cài continued loading bullets into the magazine, replying, "Seems like that's our only option for now."Huǎngzi, with a playful twinkle in his eye, teased Lǎo Cài, "Hey there, Lǎo Cài, come clean now. You've already got a dose of that corpse venom. Why not be a good sport and coax it out? Worst case scenario, you'll just get stung again, but hey, its poison won't do a thing to you anymore."
Lǎo Cài, being a bit naive, actually fell for Huǎngzi's cheeky banter. Just as he was about to grab his gun and take the plunge off the platform, I quickly intervened, turning to Huǎngzi with a mix of exasperation and urgency, saying, "Seriously? We're in the thick of it, and you're pulling Lǎo Cài's leg? If you've got a trick up your sleeve, spill the beans already."
Huǎngzi chuckled, "Looks like you've got me pegged, Lǎo Qín. Seems like it's time to pull out all the stops."
To our surprise, Huǎngzi then produced a crumpled pack of cigarettes from his shark-proof suit. Talk about being resourceful!
He handed me a cigarette and lit one for himself, taking a long drag before saying, "I had a feeling things wouldn't go smoothly. Luckily, I had these smokes handy to pass the time."
Being a seasoned smoker myself, I took the cigarette and lit it, inhaling deeply before urging, "Enough with the small talk. If you've got a plan, let's hear it already."
Huǎngzi agreed with a nod and proceeded to empty the pack of cigarettes onto the stone platform, remarking, "It's a simple solution, just watch."
With swift movements, he lit all the cigarettes and tossed them one by one under the platform, swiftly filling the entire chamber with smoke.
I quickly grasped his plan; he intended to smoke out the scorpion from beneath the platform.
As more than a dozen cigarettes ignited simultaneously, the potency of the smoke was unmistakable. Before long, thick white smoke billowed up from beneath the platform, engulfing not only the scorpion but also causing discomfort to me in the process.Huǎngzi, with a mischievous glint in his eye, teased Lǎo Cài, "Come on, Lǎo Cài, you've already been poisoned by the corpse venom. Why not be a sport and lure it out? At worst, you'll just get stung again, but its poison won't affect you anymore."
Lǎo Cài, being a bit gullible, actually fell for Huǎngzi's nonsense. Just as he was about to grab his gun and jump off the platform, I quickly stopped him and turned to Huǎngzi, saying, "Seriously? We're in this mess, and you're teasing Lǎo Cài? If you have a plan, spill it already."
Huǎngzi chuckled, "Looks like you know me too well, Lǎo Qín. Seems like it's time for my last resort."
To our shock, Huǎngzi then pulled out a crumpled pack of cigarettes from his shark-proof suit. Talk about being prepared!
He handed me a cigarette and lit one for himself, taking a long drag before saying, "I knew this wouldn't go smoothly. Luckily, I had the foresight to bring cigarettes to pass the time."
Being an old smoker myself, I took the cigarette and lit it up, inhaling deeply before urging, "Enough chit-chat. If you've got a plan, let's hear it already."
Now that the threat from the scorpions has been neutralized and we've satisfied our nicotine cravings, it's time to press on.
As we approached the doorway, I couldn't help but steal a glance at the body that had suddenly appeared. My heart sank. This was one of the members who had descended with Professor Zhang, and he looked so young.
The soldier's death was truly horrific. His mouth hung open as if he were screaming, yet his jaw was stripped of flesh. His entire body had been devoured, leaving behind a mere husk. It sent shivers down my spine.
I sighed and remarked, "Looks like Professor Zhang and his crew are facing some serious odds too. We need to brace ourselves for what lies ahead."
Lao Cai nodded in agreement. "These water monkeys are clever to use scorpions against us. We'll need to be even more vigilant from now on."
It's true, no matter how fierce these animals may be, we have our guns. What we fear is the element of surprise, something we can't anticipate nor defend against.
Huǎngzi didn't overthink it but rather nervously clasped his hands together and murmured to the corpse, "Bro, you lived with honor and died with greatness. On behalf of the people, I thank you. Please bless the three of us and ensure everything goes smoothly. Brother, I'll find someone to pray for your soul later. Rest peacefully in heaven, Amitabha!"
With that, he carefully sidestepped the body and walked out of the stone chamber.
