In the afternoon, we clung to hope for a miracle, but it was all in vain. It wasn't until the sun was almost setting that the bodies of the two soldiers still hadn't surfaced.
The remaining soldiers seemed visibly shaken, though they stayed silent, their emotions clear as day.
In the military, a squad leader would never allow their troops to show such emotions. Even if they were on the verge of madness, it would be better than the silence that signified despair.
"A soldier should never lose hope, no matter the circumstances, especially on the battlefield." This was the sternest statement Sergeant Wang made during our first lesson as new recruits.
With a touch of reluctance, the soldiers began gathering their belongings.
As the last glimmer of sunlight disappeared behind the mountains, we set off for home, carried by the evening breeze.
Upon our return, my mom bustled about preparing dinner while chiding us for not coming back for lunch. However, she seemed to sense that something was off and didn't push the matter further.
The heavy atmosphere made me feel extremely uneasy. After a tumultuous day, our dinner lacked its usual liveliness. Especially the soldiers, who barely touched their food.
After dinner, Professor Zhang called for me, Huǎngzi, Lǎo Cài, and the others to his room, saying he needed to discuss something important.
So far, although Huǎngzi and I were still somewhat on the outside, Professor Zhang always included us in discussions when issues arose. Not just because we knew some inside information, but also because Professor Zhang hoped to learn more about the water monkeys from us.
Upon entering Professor Zhang's room, a heavy silence filled the air. Sensing the need to uplift everyone, Professor Zhang stepped forward, his words carrying a weight of encouragement. "Listen up, comrades," he began, his tone steady yet filled with warmth. "Let's not dwell on emotions. Though those four sacrificed their lives, we're still here, breathing and fighting. Moping around won't bring them back or honor their memory. Instead, let's honor them by carrying on their unfinished work, by giving them the legacy they deserve."
Professor Zhang wasn't known for his eloquence, but these words were delivered with conviction, lifting spirits all around.
Sure enough, the soldiers lifted their heads, their gaze firm, a newfound resolve on their faces.
Led by a soldier named Hu, they echoed, "Professor's right. We must handle the Water Monkey matter properly, or we'll dishonor our fallen brothers." The others nodded in agreement.
"Alright!" Professor Zhang nodded approvingly. "Now, let's discuss the safest plan for diving. Based on the images from the last probe, the underwater crevice is likely the Water Monkey's lair. To understand what they are, we must explore it. So......"
Just as Professor Zhang was about to finish, Huǎngzi's voice rose, a mix of surprise and a touch of anger as he blurted out, "Are you serious? It's too risky down there! Are you trying to get more people hurt?"
As Huǎngzi spoke, Professor Zhang's face darkened in an instant, a stark departure from his usual demeanor.
Professor Zhang picked up on the underlying tone in Huǎngzi's words, sensing a lack of regard for the soldiers' lives. It was a sentiment that would unsettle anyone. However, Professor Zhang was a man of considerable poise and didn't let his emotions get the better of him. Instead, he contained his frustration and calmly addressed Huǎngzi's query, "Do you happen to have a better idea?"
Caught off guard by Professor Zhang's composed response, Huǎngzi had intended to provoke a reaction. But he hadn't anticipated the professor's tactful approach, leaving him momentarily flustered.
After collecting his thoughts, Huǎngzi hesitated before proposing, "Well, I do have one idea... um, we could try draining all the water from the dark pond. That way, the water monkeys wouldn't have anywhere to hide, and we could easily capture them."
Although Huǎngzi came up with a spur-of-the-moment solution, it was evidently flawed and quite far-fetched.
Despite the dark pond not being particularly vast or deep, nestled amidst the mountains as it was, it stretched quite a distance. It was highly likely that the water in the dark pond originated from deep within the mountains.
Considering this, no matter how much water you drained from the pond, it would ultimately be a fruitless endeavor because the mountain soil would quickly replenish the dark pond with moisture. Therefore, this approach was simply not feasible.
Professor Zhang let out a small chuckle, showing a hint of amusement, before responding calmly, "That's quite a joke, isn't it? But let's think about it. Even if it were possible, what then?
Have you considered the consequences? Imagine draining all that water, only to have the water monkeys retreat into the cracks. Who knows how deep those crevices go? And what if they're filled with water too? If they are, what's our next step?"
Without waiting for Huǎngzi to answer, Professor Zhang continued in a thoughtful tone, "And let's not forget, if we lower the water level in the dark pond, it's going to raise suspicion among the water monkeys. What if they decide to migrate at night, finding refuge deep in the mountains or seeking out another water source? Would draining the pond be a waste of time?"
I had never seen someone so quick-witted. In just a moment, he dismissed Huǎngzi's idea and eloquently explained the potential pitfalls and considerations involved. It was clear that Professor Zhang had a foresight that many of us lacked. Unlike us, who often just scratched the surface when considering matters.
Huǎngzi found himself momentarily speechless. What Professor Zhang said made perfect sense. Even if he wanted to argue, he knew he needed a valid reason. After all, he couldn't just confront someone without a solid basis!
Seeing Huǎngzi turn red with embarrassment, I gave his shoulder a reassuring pat and motioned for him to sit down and listen to others before jumping in with his own excitement.
Huǎngzi managed a nonchalant laugh, attempting to conceal his awkwardness.
Observing Huǎngzi's silence, Professor Zhang's sharp gaze shifted to the others present, prompting, "Anyone else have better ideas? Feel free to share."
Despite Professor Zhang's polished demeanor, he was no pushover. Considering Huǎngzi's reaction, I figured keeping quiet was the wisest choice. Let others learn from Huǎngzi's experience; there's no need to invite trouble upon oneself.
Sure enough, everyone got the hint and remained silent, waiting for Professor Zhang to continue speaking.
Professor Zhang, seeing the lack of response from everyone, naturally continued, "Since there aren't any other suggestions, let me share my viewpoint. As it stands, the water monkeys are quite fierce and not easy to deal with. However, they are still living creatures, not monsters. So, if we're cautious, we can handle them. Our daytime actions have already tipped our hand, so tomorrow we must dive again. This time, we need to be extra careful and avoid repeating today's mistakes."
At this point, Lǎo Cài offered his own perspective, suggesting, "Professor Zhang is right. But personally, to prevent further mishaps, the divers shouldn't split up. It's best to have teams of four, which will increase overall vigilance."
"I agree with this view, aligns with mine," Professor Zhang concluded, ending the meeting. Our task, Huǎngzi's and mine remained the same as during the day – securing the perimeter and preventing unrelated individuals from approaching the dark pond.
