The exact count of water monkeys lurking in the dark pond remains a mystery to us. Despite two failed attempts at underwater exploration, Detective Captain Lǎo Cài insists on plunging into the rescue operation. Honestly, I strongly oppose this decision.

Comrade Jiāng shares the same concern and hesitantly voices, "Captain Cài, Professor Zhang made it clear that if something were to happen to him, the rest of us should report and await instructions rather than endanger ourselves."

Upon hearing this, Lǎo Cài hurriedly interjects, "Come on, Jiāng, can't you see the urgency here? We can't afford to delay if people down there are in need of rescue. We'd be risking lives."

Comrade Jiāng, being an honest person, hesitates in response to Lǎo Cài's urgency. After a moment of contemplation, he adds, "While that's true, the situation down there is incredibly perilous. I wouldn't be able to justify it." if something were to happen to you again."

Lǎo Cài just went ahead and played the tough guy, saying, "We detectives, we're always dealing with danger, year in, year out. We've seen it all. What's there to justify, anyway?"

Seeing that Comrade Jiāng wasn't budging, Lǎo Cài started to get really anxious. He winked at me while saying, "Hey, Comrade Qín, why don't you tell them that when it comes to dealing with these kinds of situations, it's us cops who step up, right?"

I was caught off guard for a moment, thinking to myself how cunning  Lǎo Cài was. Whenever there's trouble, he's quick to toss it my way, making it seem like we're tight buddies or something.Just as I was about to give him a piece of my mind, to my surprise, Huǎngzi, who seemed to have lost his marbles, grabbed me from behind and stepped forward, saying, "Lǎo Cài is right. As police officers, if we don't serve the people, can we really live up to the words written outside the public security bureau?"

I looked at Huǎngzi in astonishment and warned, "This is no joke. Don't just go along with things blindly."

Huǎngzi blinked and whispered to me, "Do you still want to avenge Xiǎo Líng yourself? If you do, listen to me. This is our chance."

Of course, I wanted to avenge Xiǎo Líng, but in this situation, what could I possibly do for revenge?

It's not that I'm afraid of danger or overly cautious about my life, but those water monkeys are no joke! Even if I give it my all, it might not be enough. Is it really worth risking my life for something that might not even make a difference?

Just as I was pondering this, Huǎngzi whispered again, "Lǎo Qín, the equipment here is all set. We can team up with Lǎo Cài and dive together to assess the situation. Opportunities like this don't come often, so let's think carefully before we make a decision."

Suddenly, it all made sense to me. That's what he meant.

Upon closer reflection, I realized I'm quite familiar with firearms, and my physical fitness is decent. With a bit of caution, handling one or two water monkeys shouldn't be too daunting, especially with Lǎo Cài's support.As I thought about it, I had to go along with Huǎngzi's earlier words and said to Jiāng, "You're right about my buddy Huǎngzi's observation. Lǎo Cài is a seasoned old comrade, no stranger to danger. This kind of risk is just another day at the office for him."

Changing the subject, I continued, "But your concerns make sense too. How about this? I'll go down with Lǎo Cài. That way, we can watch out for each other, making it safer for everyone."

Jiāng, visibly worried, shook his head and said, "That's even worse. Lǎo Cài is part of the system, he has a reason to go down. But if you join him, it's a different story. If higher-ups find out, they might come down hard on me."

"I'm telling you, Xiao Jiāng, don't underestimate our buddy Lǎo Qín. He's a retired veteran, only back for a few days, but still got all his skills intact," Huǎngzi interjected, his eyes darting around as if struck by a sudden idea. "Plus, with me, the mighty here, you can relax. If anything happens, I'll keep an eye on him."

Upon hearing this, we all exchanged bewildered looks, staring at Huǎngzi like he was crazy. But he paid no mind, maintaining his confident demeanor.Comrade Jiang waved his hand, firmly stating, "No, none of you can go down there. This matter is not up for discussion."

Lǎo Cài, becoming impatient, retorted with a blunt remark, "Who says so? If you're afraid of taking responsibility, how about this? I'll write up a life-and-death contract for you."

"Yes! Let's draw up a life-and-death agreement!" Both Huǎngzi and I chimed in enthusiastically.

Comrade Jiang was taken aback; he had never encountered such stubbornness from us before. He was momentarily speechless with frustration.

Before Comrade Jiang could refuse again, Lǎo Cài decisively declared, "Alright, no more indecision. The decision is made!"Seeming a bit concerned, he turned back to Huǎngzi and remarked, "I think it's best if Lǎo Qín and I handle this. You might be better off staying put and not stirring up any trouble."

Huǎngzi, feeling underestimated, couldn't help but laugh aloud and quipped back, "You guys are judging a book by its cover! Did you forget? I used to roam the Xiāng River back in the day while you were still playing in shallow waters! Don't underestimate me!"

Huǎngzi had a habit of boasting, but believing him was like signing your own death warrant.

Unfazed by our thoughts, Huǎngzi continued to tinker with the diving equipment with the confidence of a bull in a china shop.But the way he handled everything so smoothly, it seemed like he'd dabbled in these things before. Even with that submachine gun, he held it with such confidence, making me wonder if he picked it up from movies or if he actually knew his way around it.

Huǎngzi confidently picked up a submachine gun, giving it a thorough inspection with a satisfied nod. Then, he tinkered with the magazine. Surprisingly, he even managed to pull off a bit of a Schwarzenegger-esque pose, as if straight out of an action movie, before casually lighting up a cigarette.

At that moment, we were all at a loss, just standing there watching him, momentarily forgetting to intervene in his antics.

Seeing our puzzled faces, Huǎngzi waved his hand at us with a playful grin and quipped, "Hey, folks! Don't just stand there admiring my moves. It's time to get down to business!"

At first, Lǎo Cài and I were taken aback, but then we snapped out of it. Comrade Jiāng was so desperate he was practically in tears as he tried to reason with Huǎngzi, who simply brushed him off with an air of nonchalance.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Lǎo Cài and I quickly went to sort out our gear.

Before long, we had the wetsuits on, but when it came to handling the equipment, we were clueless. After all, we weren't pros. We had to rely on Comrade Jiāng and the others for that.Seeing Comrade Jiāng still persistent, Huǎngzi stubbed out his cigarette and said, "Buddy, don't mess around, be careful not to accidentally fire that gun!"

Once those words were out, Comrade Jiāng was left bewildered, wondering who was causing trouble for whom.

Lǎo Cài spoke to Comrade Jiāng, saying, "Stop meddling, just do your thing. Hurry up and help the three of us get our stuff together. Don't waste time, or Professor Zhang and the others down there will start cursing us."

Seeing the three of us looking utterly hopeless, Comrade Jiāng and his team began to reconsider. Coupled with Lǎo Cài mentioning Professor Zhang, their last traces of hesitation vanished. They reluctantly complained while begrudgingly helping us install the equipment.

Before we dove in, Comrade Jiāng explained the functions of each instrument and pointed out important details. The three of us nodded repeatedly, looking very much like eager students absorbing the lesson.It seemed like Liàngzi, who had been silent all this while, couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy seeing us all dressed up so stylishly. In his envy, he quickly expressed his desire to join Lǎo Cài in the rescue mission.

Lǎo Cài gave him a firm look and said, "Are you seriously suggesting that? You practically look like you've seen a ghost whenever there's a corpse around. Stop stirring up trouble."

Liàngzi glanced at Huǎngzi and remarked, "Huǎngzi isn't much better than me. He was almost about to hurl..."

Before Liàngzi could finish, Huǎngzi gave him a dismissive look and cut in, "What are you staring at? I've got a stomach of steel. Can't tell me otherwise."

Liàngzi shrunk back, feeling a bit embarrassed to continue, and could only look at us with a hint of longing.

Lǎo Cài gave him a comforting pat on the shoulder and said, "You've got other important tasks. When the city officials arrive later, you'll be in charge of welcoming them. Just relax and wait for that."
